Cooking lessons at Wilson Stuart School are centred on equipping students with the ability to prepare and select healthy food and drink choices. We focus on teaching students which ingredients would be a healthy choice, and understanding the reasons why. Students are encouraged to find recipes that they would like to make, with criteria given such as cooking on a budget, or focussing on a specific meal time or food group. Students are to work as independently as possible in sessions, selecting ingredients from their storage locations and equipment needed for making and serving their recipes.
They also have the opportunity to shop for the ingredients needed for their recipe either through using online shopping tools or visiting supermarkets, encouraging them to identify and check prices of food products. Applied learning within the subject is demonstrated through projects such as running a café or serving drinks to others, providing students with some work experience and demonstrating how food can be used in the working world.
